Few people associate visiting Québec’s vineyards with winter. We normally plan this activity during the summer or autumn months. However, some vineyards welcome guests in winter and offer an experience that is well worth the detour. Here are 5 good reasons to head to the Eastern Townships to explore the Route des vins in winter.
To Discover Unique Landscapes
Although vineyards can be found all over the world, regions where you can admire vineyard landscapes covered in snow are quite rare. Here in Québec, and especially in Brome-Missisquoi, we’re lucky enough to have access to these magnificent winter landscapes. Let’s enjoy our privilege, it’s right next door! For the most beautiful views, head out to Léon Courville, Vigneron, Domaine Bresee and the Domaine des Côtes d’Ardoise.
A Perfect Complement to a Ski Weekend
We can find many vineyards near the Mount SUTTON and Bromont, montagne d’expériences ski resorts. Therefore, it’s easy to stop on the way to your ski chalet and pick up a bottle to enjoy by the fire after a long day on the slopes. It’s also worthwhile, in my experience, to extend your stay and take a full day to visit the vineyards.
For an Intimate Experience
As I mentioned in the introduction, the Route des vins vineyards are less crowded during winter. Therefore, you’ll likely have a more intimate experience with the staff on site. You’ll be able to take your time and ask all the questions that come to mind and learn more about viticulture in Québec.
To Savour Ice Wine
Québec’s nordic climate is ideal to produce delicious ice wines. To produce this type of wine, grapes are harvested and pressed when the temperature fluctuates between -8 °C and -12 °C. The result is a remarkably sweet wine. For ice wine, we recommend stopping at the vineyard l’Orpailleur, in Dunham. Their ice wine has given the domain its renown and has won awards in many international competitions.
To Enjoy the Vignoble du Ruisseau’s Cocktail Bar
Besides producing wines, Vignoble du Ruisseau, in Dunham, distills a fine range of exceptional spirits. These products are used as a base for the delicious cocktails served directly at the Domaine. In addition, the decor of the cocktail bar is simply magnificent. Those who haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit this vineyard will think they’ve discovered a true hidden treasure in the middle of the Dunham countryside.
